You will need to know your vehicle’s engine size to use this table. Once you know, you can determine your Volvo timing belt interval by using the first table and the reference key. Be sure to look at the second table to see whether or not the engine is interference-fit.
1.9L | Timing Belt & Tensioner Every 105,000 Miles |
2.1L | {11} |
2.3L (B23) | {11} |
2.3L 4 Cyl. (B230, B230F & B230FT) | {55} |
2.3L 4 Cyl. (B234) | {48} |
2.3L 5 Cyl. | {39} |
2.4L 5 Cyl. Gasoline (Except B5244S7) | {39} |
2.4L 5 Cyl. Gasoline (B5244S7) | Every 150,000 Miles |
2.4L Diesel | Every 75,000 Miles |
2.5L 5 Cyl. | Timing Belt & Tensioner Every 120,000 Miles |
2.8L | Timing Belt & Tensioner Every 105,000 Miles |
2.9L | {45} |

Reference key
{11} On 1985 & prior models, replace at 40,000 mile intervals. On 1986-94 models, replace at 50,000 mile interval. On 1995 & later models, replacement at 70,000 miles is recommended but not required, but the belt should be replaced at 100,000 miles (if not replaced previously).
{39} On 1993 & models prior models, replace timing belt every 50,000 miles. On 1994-98 models, replace belt & tensioner every 70,000 miles. On 1999-2003 models, replace timing belt & tensioner every 105,000 miles. On 2004-10 models, timing belt & tensioner every 120,000 miles.
{45} On 1992 & prior models, replace every 20,000 miles. On 1993-94 models, replace every 60,000 miles. On 1995-98 models, replace every 70,000 miles. On 1999 & later models, replace timing belt & tensioner every 105,000 miles.
{48} On 1992 & prior models, inspect at 5,000 miles, replace at 50,000 miles with follow up inspection 5,000 miles later. On 1993 & later engines, replace every 50,000 miles.
{55} On 1991 & prior B230F engines & 1994 B230FT engines less EGR, inspect at 5,000 miles, replace at 50,000 miles with a follow-up inspection 5,000 miles later. On 1992-94 B230F engines & 1994 B230FT engines w/EGR, inspect at 10,000 miles, replace at 50,000 miles with a follow-up inspection 10,000 miles later. On 1995 & later models, replacement at 70,000 miles is recommended but not required, but the belt should be replaced at 100,000 miles (if not replaced previously).
